Project Overview

The project is concerned with recycling electronic waste by using the services of people with special needs, thus creating employment opportunities and funding for the rehabilitation of this population. We collect electronic equipment (such as old computers, printed circuit boards, controllers, switchboards, communication equipment and so forth), transport them to associations that employ people with special needs, teach them to dismantle the equipment, recycle each component respectively, and pay employees their due wage.

Mode of operation

The project coordinates between companies, production plants, institutions and local authorities who are interested in promoting and improving environmental protection, on the one hand, and rehabilitative employment agents for people with special needs, on the other hand. ECOmmunity contacts organizations interested in donating waste, and where this waste has financial value, a receipt is issued for the donation, thus enabling the organization to receive a tax refund of 35% of the donations’ value. “Ecology for the Sheltered Community” is the professional body that supports the project in areas of operations, logistics and marketing, in adherence to environmental protection regulatory standards.

 Benefits for environmental protection

Involvement in this social ecological project shall increase awareness of the importance of collecting electronic waste, and also increase the scope of recycling such waste (that is currently disposed of together with general waste, and causes severe environmental damage).

Benefits for those with special needs

According to data published in 2007 by the National Social Security authority, approximately 80% of people who receive disability pensions, comprised of around 120,000 people, do not participate in the labor force. Those who do work are employed in monotonous tasks such as packaging or assembly. In comparison, people employed though this project in dismantling and sorting components, enjoy rehabilitative occupation, in appropriate conditions, and receive a wage from “Ecology for the Sheltered Community”. Employment experience has demonstrated that working in the field of recycling improves self-image among this population, and is suited to their abilities.

Benefits for Donors

In recent years awareness of social responsibility has grown amongst various organizations. Participation in this project assists in employing this special population, and provides a suitable, legal solution for recycling electronic waste.
